Our first three principles of making supportive, reasonable, sustainable, and enlightened resolutions that can energize you rather than add to your stress:
- Instead of beating yourself up for what you do wrong and want to change, acknowledge yourself for what you’re doing right, and want to keep doing.
- Do more of the things you love, if they are things that will support you in amplifying your joy, your life force, and your health. You’re more likely to keep doing them.
- Choose what’s natural. In many situations you have a choice to either do what’s easy and available, but often unnatural, or what’s biologically appropriate, and satisfies the metabolic needs that were programmed into all of us by evolution. When there’s a choice, choose what truly supports you, choose what’s natural.
The fourth principle: Fortify Yourself
Not everything in the world is good for you. In fact, our modern life presents us with several important challenges. Because many things are significantly different from the way they developed and evolved, they have become threatening to our health and our lives.
Fortify yourself against what?
We’ve all heard about the terrible consequences of the recent train crash and chemical spill in Ohio. But we are also all exposed every day to chemicals we don’t hear about. Some of them are in our food, because of agricultural practices, some in our air and water.
Beside being full of chemicals, our food supply now also has less nutritional value than was in food grown a hundred or even fifty years ago. In addition, our foods are increasingly more processed, and the more processed, the less value it provides.
But there’s more. In addition to chemicals we never evolved to deal with, and nutrient deficiencies, we are constantly bombarded with electromagnetic fields from modern technology, we are exposed to all sorts of infectious microorganisms that seem to be getting harder to treat, and there are many health implications of global warming. Wow!
Who you gonna call? Who can we trust?
Who is responsible for taking care of these things? The government? Political parties? Agribusiness? Big Pharma? Doctors and the health care system? Teachers and schools? Family members? Universities and institutions? Religious organizations? The UN?
Ultimately it’s on us!
We can’t depend on external agencies and institutions to protect us, so we have no choice but to assume the responsibility ourselves. We can’t hide; we need to deal with it. Our best prospects for self-defense can only result from fortifying ourselves against our challenges.
What is fortification?
Fortification is being proactive rather than reactive. In my last email I outlined a program for healthy eating. Vegetables are key. If you didn’t get that please let me know and we’ll resend it. It’s interesting to me that as nutritional science progresses, more and more beneficial nutrients are discovered in naturally occurring foods. We could worry about providing for these nutrients, or just eat the naturally occurring foods that contain them, whatever they are. We evolved eating those foods, that’s why they’re good for us.
Supplements
A good diet is one form of health fortification. However, modern agricultural, food processing, and transportation practices have led to the nutritional deterioration of much of what we eat. Because of this, I believe that nutritional supplementation is an easy and very beneficial form of fortifying ourselves. I have witnessed extensive benefits that people have received from broad-based multivitamin-mineral supplements to replace the compounds missing from most diets; and we frequently use and rely on specific support products to offset and treat various problems, imbalances, and illnesses in our patients.
Detoxification
Because of the onslaught of unnatural chemicals that we are all constantly exposed to, I believe that detoxification is necessary. You might think about moving to a remote place where you hope you will be less exposed to these chemicals, but such pollutants have even been found in people who live primitively on desert islands. There’s no escape.
The reality is that we are all at risk, so, in addition to avoiding obvious exposure wherever we can, we need to fortify ourselves by conscious detoxification. Detoxification can involve nutritional supplements that promote the metabolic pathways of our organs of elimination and detoxification, as well as physical modalities such as sauna, etc.
Immune Support
Because global warming seems to be increasing the number of infectious microbes we are exposed to, and because standard medical practices are leading to the development of antibiotic-resistant microbes, an important type of fortification is the promotion of a strong immune system to stave off infectious disease if possible, and in case we get sick, to minimize the extent of our illness. For both of these purposes we use herbal and nutritional products and a variety of modalities such as acupuncture and electromedicine.
We believe that strengthening your resistance provides the best way
to offset the challenges of the modern world
So make an enlightened resolution to fortify yourself
